Probiotics are the friendly bacteria and yeast in our stomach which stimulate the digestive organs and help all the activities of the gut to be executed well. It aids the food to travel smoothly in the intestines. There are two kinds of probiotics Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Their functions are numerous from lowering the ‘bad’ bacteria in the body to helping in all functions of digestion. Due to its numerous functions some of the diseases it helps in fighting are Irritable bowel syndrome, Inflammation bowel disease and diarrhea. It also helps in fighting eczema, urinary and vaginal diseases, general oral heath and numerous allergies.

Milk

Bacteria can be added to milk to make it probiotic. There are a lot of varieties and flavours available in the market. The acidophilus milk is probiotic. But care should be taken as it is also known to upset the system of children and adults and cause digestion issues.

Yogurt in its natural form is a probiotic. The packaged ones available in the market in various flavours do not have as high a nutritional content, but are handy and easily available. Homemade yogurt is the best as it is made at home and no artificial substitutes are added to it. It is wholesome and can be eaten as it is or as a side dish. Various dishes are made using yogurt. Butter milk, a byproduct of homemade butter, is also a great probiotic.

Kefir

Having the goodness of both milk and yogurt, Kefir is a dairy product made of kefir grains and milk. Goat”s milk is usually used in itsd preperation. Highly nutritious and healthy it is an oxidant and can be taken as a smoothie or a health drink.

Pickle

Another item always available at home, the pickle is an all in one food as it has nutrition and taste both. Pickles act as a probiotic and can be eaten with chapattis and sandwiches.

Some people always have a bar of dark chocolate in their handbags. The best answer to combat sudden hunger pangs, dark chocolate is probiotic in nature and loaded with antioxidant powers to help digestion. And of course, no one can deny the delicious taste of a chocolate.

Tempeh

Made of soy protein, tempeh acts as a probiotic which can be savoured baked, grilled or as a salad. It acts as a substitute to meat and has the richness of vitamin B12 and other minerals.

It is made from and contains large quantities of probiotics. There are new varieties in the market which have extra probiotics and hence extra health.

When olives are stored in brine, it accelerates probiotic activity thereby enhancing the benefits olives provide us with. We can then use it for salads and pizza toppings, making pasta etc.

Microalgae

This one is an ocean plant often addressed as blue algae. Full of microbial activity, this green colored juice with a grass touch is now available in grocery stores.

Kimchi

A Korean dish, kimchi is a pickled fermented which is spicy, hot and very tasty. It has iron, calcium, vitamins A, B and C. It is served with all dishes and meals in Korea and is very similar to Sauerkraut which again is full of probiotic elements.
